Loan Watch: Fernandez continues to shine

Tuesday 11 April 2023 11:23

Manchester United defender Alvaro Fernandez grabbed a vital assist for loan club Preston North End on Easter Monday, as the play-off-chasing Lilywhites beat Reading 2-1 at Deepdale in the Championship.

The 20-year-old, who spoke with club media recently about his spell in Lancashire, again played the full 90 minutes in England's second tier for Ryan Lowe's side. The magazine containing the full interview with Alvaro is out today and can be purchased here.

PNE are still looking to creep into the Championship's top six before the end of the season and Fernandez set up Everton loanee Tom Cannon for the game's opening goal, taking his assist tally to six for 2022/23, in his 37th appearance.

Brad Potts scored a dramatic injury-time winner to guarantee a third straight win, which only keeps the Deepdale outfit below local rivals Blackburn Rovers in sixth on goal difference. The sides face each other on Saturday 22 April in what could be a decisive clash.

Elsewhere, forward Amad played the full 90 minutes as Sunderland beat Cardiff City 1-0 away from home.

Three days after the Black Cats' enthralling 4-4 draw with Hull City, Dennis Cirkin's 60th-minute strike proved pivotal, with Tony Mowbray's side just four points away from the play-offs now.

Staying in the Championship, Ethan Laird was an unused substitute as QPR picked up a valuable point when drawing 2-2 at West Bromwich Albion, with Hannibal also failing to feature in Birmingham City's 0-0 draw with Stoke City. Axel Tuanzebe was not involved in the matchday squad for the Potters.

Shola Shoretire played 59 minutes in League One yesterday afternoon, as his Bolton Wanderers side were held to a late 1-1 draw by Cambridge United.

Declan John had put the hosts in front, before a last-gasp equaliser from Sam Smith ensured a share of the points at the University of Bolton Stadium.

Elsewhere in League One, Charlie Savage was unfortunate to put through his own net, as Forest Green Rovers suffered a 2-0 defeat at Wycombe Wanderers. The Gloucestershire outfit are now 14 points from safety, with just five games to play.

Di'shon Bernard was an unused substitute in Portsmouth's goalless draw with Morecambe.

The international break might be in full swing, but Charlie Savage had a key part to play domestically at the weekend.

Dropping down another division into League Two, Ethan Galbraith played the first half of Salford City's dramatic 3-2 win over AFC Wimbledon that keeps the Ammies' play-off hopes well and truly alive.

Salford were trailing 2-1 with just moments to go and Callum Hendry then missed a penalty, before scoring twice in 60 seconds during additional time at the Cherry Red Records Stadium, handing former United coach Neil Wood's side a vital victory.

Charlie McNeill played the full 90 minutes too in England's fourth tier, but his Newport County side lost 4-0 to Stockport County. Finally, in the National League, Maximilian Oyedele and Joe Hugill both featured in Altrincham's 1-0 defeat to Gateshead, with Oyedele involved for 80 minutes of the contest and Hugill withdrawn on 70 minutes at the J Davidson Stadium.
