"A diehard defender, someone who will work hard, that will put my body on the line. I'll do anything to make myself and the team better."
That’s how Gemma Evans described herself as a player, upon becoming Manchester United Women’s first signing of summer 2023. The 27-year-old arrived at the club in July having made 99 appearances in the English top flight, following previous spells with Yeovil Town, Bristol City and, most recently, Reading. But it was back in her home country where the Wales international’s senior club career began, with Cardiff City. Evans represented the Bluebirds from 2015 to 2017, and proudly received her first fully-fledged cap for the national team during her time in the Welsh capital. The defender’s international debut came in 2016 and she has since gone on to represent the Dragons more than 50 times, bringing up her half-century against Iceland in February. Gemma’s move to United now sees her link up with her compatriot - and Reds midfielder - Hayley Ladd in Manchester, who she has formed a formidable centre-back partnership with for Wales. Speaking upon the announcement of the signing, head coach Marc Skinner highlighted the know-how that Evans adds to his team, stating: “Gemma will bring a wealth of experience to our playing squad and offer even more versatility to our playing style. Her international credentials and WSL experience will help us, as we navigate multiple competitions.”
