International Reds: Bruno keeps racking up assists

The World Cup warm-ups continued across the globe, with Bruno Fernandes showing his quality in Portugal's 2-0 win over USA.

The Manchester United skipper wore the captain's armband again for his country, in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, and was in sparkling form in Atlanta.

After 36 minutes, the midfielder ran onto a pass by Vitinha and produced an outrageous backheel to Trincao, who took a touch and found the bottom corner of the net with a left-footed finish.

Just before the hour mark, Fernandes, who is chasing the Premier League record for assists in a single season, set up Joao Felix, who thumped home from the edge of the box for the killer second goal.

Diogo Dalot started in defence and he played the first half, while Bruno was withdrawn with five minutes remaining.

Academy graduate seals historic World Cup entry

England suffered a first-ever defeat to an Asian nation, when Japan followed up their 1-0 win in Scotland with the same scoreline at Wembley.

Brighton & Hove Albion winger Kaoru Mitoma scored the only goal of the game.

Kobbie Mainoo was selected in midfield and tried to press him claims in the 71 minutes he was on the pitch, before being replaced by another United Academy graduate in Everton's James Garner.

Harry Maguire only came on towards the end, but took the captain's armband, and went close to scoring an equaliser with a header, as he was a menace in the opposition box throughout the closing stages.

Brazil saw off Croatia 3-1 with Casemiro and Matheus Cunha keeping their places in the starting XI, in Orlando.

Cunha looked lively going forwards, having a couple of dangerous shots and picking out Vinicius Jnr with a good pass, that led to Danilo Santos's opener. Brentford's Igor Thiago was one of the scorers, with his first international goal coming from the penalty spot, after Lovro Majer equalised.

Arsenal's Gabriel Martinelli wrapped things up and skipper Casemiro said afterwards: “We'll come back strongly and give it our all at the World Cup. We know that expectations are always very high for the national team and we have to rise to that challenge.”

Senne Lammens was on the bench as Belgium drew 1-1 with Mexico, as Nottingham Forest's Matz Sels kept goal.
